Extrait

The correspondence between the Revivalist theologian from Halle, F. A. G. Tholuck, and the Oxford theologian E. B. Pusey comprises 25 letters from the years 1825 to 1865. From the point of view of theological history these letters are rich with information, and are made accessible here for the first time in their entirety and critically verified. The extensive reference index as well as the in-depth historical-theological introduction elucidate the "Sitz im Leben" of the correspondence in terms of biographical backgrounds as well as ecclesiastical and theological history. This book contributes to a better understanding of the conflict-ridden "saddle period" of modern Protestantism, when it was caught in the tension between authority and faith. It offers new insights into the self-conceptions of Revivalist theology in Germany and of the Anglo-catholic Oxford Movement in England. Moreover, the book is a contribution towards a better historical understanding of the theological and ecclesiastical-legal difference between the churches that partook in the Meissener process – a difference that exists to this day, preventing their "full, visible unity".>
